In modern Russia, Christmas is celebrated on the night of January 6th to 7th. However, preparations for this holiday begin long before this date. From November 28th to January 6th, the Christmas fast is observed, lasting for 40 days and culminating on Christmas Eve. This period involves not only abstaining from certain foods but also a time for spiritual purification, reflection on one’s actions, getting rid of negative thoughts, and vices.
During this time, it is important to reconsider relationships with close ones, contemplate the eternal – God and the soul, analyze one’s actions, and draw necessary conclusions. The fast concludes on January 6th, and on this day, the Christmas feast is prepared. This day is also called Christmas Eve since the main dish on the table is kutia – a porridge made from wheat and honey.
It is believed that one should start dinner only after the appearance of the “first star” in the sky. This tradition is linked to the story of the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Magi to the newborn Savior.
