In today’s world, where digital technologies are deeply intertwined with our everyday lives, the threat of fraud is taking increasingly sophisticated forms. A particular danger comes from the theft and illegal use of citizens’ passport data, which, as reported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, has become a widespread issue.

Criminals are showing great inventiveness, using various methods to achieve their illicit goals. They don’t just limit themselves to stealing or finding lost passports. Their actions extend much further, including actively stealing passport information under various seemingly legitimate pretexts.

One of the most common tricks is using “employment” as bait. Imagine: after tiring months of job searching, you finally find an appealing job ad. Your hopeful expectations turn to anxious suspicion when the potential employer, under the guise of processing paperwork, asks you to provide your passport for an indefinite period. Everything seems legitimate, but at this moment, you are falling into a trap.

The passport is a key to one’s identity and is increasingly used in criminal schemes, often without the knowledge or consent of the citizen. Fraudsters can use the passport to take out loans, open bank accounts, register fictitious companies, or engage in other illegal activities. The subsequent issues, including debt recovery, criminal prosecution, and restoring one’s reputation, can turn into a nightmare.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia highlights the vulnerability of certain groups of citizens who are most often the victims of such fraud. Students, pensioners, and the unemployed—who often face financial difficulties or are naïve due to their age or lack of experience—become easy targets for fraudsters.

The temptation of quick earnings or solving financial problems often clouds judgment, and people agree to participate in suspicious transactions. This, in turn, leads to serious legal consequences. Registering commercial firms in one’s name, even if they seem legitimate, can result in involvement in illegal activities. Shell companies created to cover up fraudulent schemes use “front” individuals to divert attention from the actual criminals.

If offered to become a founder of a company without a valid reason, it’s important to be immediately suspicious. This is usually a clear signal of potential danger. Such organizations do not conduct legitimate business; their main goal is to conceal unlawful activity.

In such cases, the citizen’s passport, used to register the company, becomes evidence of their involvement in a crime. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia stresses the need for extreme caution and urges citizens to be vigilant, not trust suspicious offers, and never hand over their passport to strangers, even under the most convincing pretexts.

Protecting your passport data is essential for safety and peace of mind. Remember that recovering lost or stolen identity is a lengthy and complex process, accompanied by inevitable complications and bureaucratic obstacles, as noted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia’s press service.
