Pact includes new migration rules and ambitious trade plans

Presidents Vladimir Putin and Emomali Rahmon have signed a joint declaration on deepening strategic partnership and alliance between Russia and Tajikistan, alongside a comprehensive package of bilateral agreements.

The newly signed documents cover key areas including labour migration, transport cooperation, trade, and investment. Among the highlights is a new migration agreement requiring Tajik citizens entering Russia for work to undergo medical screening. Both countries also agreed to coordinate the organised recruitment of labour migrants.

Over one million Tajik nationals currently live and work in Russia. The new pact aims to enhance their working conditions and ensure stronger social protections.

Trade between the two nations continues to grow steadily: bilateral trade reached $1.5 billion in 2024 (a 7% increase from the previous year), and rose by a further 17.3% in 2025.
