The research vessel Akademik Tryoshnikov has completed the most northerly expedition in its operational history, reaching close to the 88th parallel north during a mission in the Arctic.
The voyage involved the relocation of the ice-resistant drifting platform North Pole from the Western to the Eastern Hemisphere — a first in the history of the project. According to Alexander Makarov, director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), the milestone was achieved through coordinated efforts between polar scientists, the ship’s crew, and polar aviation teams.
During the 40-day expedition, the Akademik Tryoshnikov covered approximately 14,500 kilometres through Arctic ice. For the first time, the North Pole station reversed its drift direction, shifting more than 400 kilometres across the polar region.
