The natural upper limit of human life today remains around 120 to 125 years, according to Russia’s chief geriatrician, Olga Tkacheva. Speaking on the subject, she stressed that reaching 150 years would require a scientific and medical breakthrough of revolutionary scale.

The topic of life extension was recently raised by President Vladimir Putin during his visit to China, where he discussed the prospect of humans living to 150 with Chinese President Xi Jinping. While advances in modern medicine offer hope, Putin noted that such demographic shifts — with elderly populations potentially outnumbering children — could have far-reaching societal consequences.

Tkacheva explained that while gerontology — the study of ageing — is evolving rapidly, most experts agree that 125 years remains the current biological ceiling. She added that longevity depends not only on medical care, but also on factors like education, lifestyle, living conditions, and how actively individuals engage in maintaining their health.
