In 2024, a new subject will appear in Russian schools – “Family studies”. This was announced by the Chairman of the Duma Committee on Family Protection, Issues of Paternity, Maternity and Childhood Nina Ostanina. She noted that family science will be taught using a single textbook, which will be prepared by next year after the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation approves this initiative. The Institute for the Study of Childhood, Family and Education is already developing methodology textbooks and teaching materials.
It was previously reported that the purpose of this school subject is to prepare adolescents for future family life and the birth of children, help in understanding the characteristics of adolescence and self-acceptance, and transfer to adolescents basic knowledge in the field of psychology and pedagogy. Worth to mention that in 40 Russian regions, family studies as part of the school curriculum in the subject “social studies” are already taught.
