The Murmansk region has significantly strengthened its position in the national sustainability ranking in tourism and hospitality, rising from the 11th place in 2022 to the sixth place by 2024. It yielded only to five regions: St. Petersburg, Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Tatarstan, Moscow, and the Tyumen region.
The ranking of Russian regions is based on indicators that evaluate not only the level of sustainability in the hospitality industry but also the level of integration of environmental friendliness into the tourism industry management system.
The region embraces its unique nature, making it an asset that particularly attracts tourists from across the country. Currently, among the most popular places to visit in the Murmansk region are the Kola Bay, Teriberka, Lapland Reserve, and the Hibiny Mountains.
According to the Russian Union of Tourism Industry, winter tourism in the Arctic region experienced a significant surge of 50-100%, leading to a shortage of available hotel rooms for the remaining season.
