Landfill reclamation for municipal solid waste in Chukotka region.

Until 2027, the construction of new waste neutralization facilities is planned in remote settlements in Chukotka, according to the press service of the regional government. Currently, 43 waste management facilities operate in the region, but another 42 facilities that were commissioned before 2019 no longer fully comply with modern standards. The solution to the problem involves the construction of new waste neutralization facilities from 2024 to 2027.

It is noted that in January 2024, waste weighing began at the landfill for solid household waste (SHW) in the regional capital, Anadyr. This step aims to provide a more accurate account of waste for the development of a waste disposal strategy.

The plans also include the completion of the reclamation of a large landfill for solid municipal waste (SMW) in Anadyr by 2025. In 2023, concession agreements were concluded for the creation of waste management complexes in Pevek and Bilibino.

The total cost of the program for handling SMW and SHW in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug is estimated at 6.5 billion rubles. Regional authorities emphasize the need for federal co-financing to build an effective waste management system in the conditions of the Far North and the Arctic zone.
