Do you think sunscreen harms the skin more than the sun does? Can drinking water protect against sunburn? Is tanning beneficial for health? A new survey conducted by the Orlando Health Cancer Institute in Florida has revealed that a significant number of Americans answered “yes” to these questions.

A third of U.S. residents under the age of 35 believe that tanning makes people more attractive and healthy. This is despite scientific studies linking sun exposure to skin cancer and premature aging.

Approximately one in seven American adults under 35 (14%) believe that daily use of sunscreen causes more harm to the skin than direct sun exposure.

Additionally, about a quarter of Americans under 35 believe that drinking water and staying hydrated help prevent sunburn.

Oncologist surgeon Rajesh Nair emphasizes that there is no such thing as a safe tan. According to him, the risk of developing skin cancer significantly increases with tanning.

Skin cancer is currently the most common type of cancer in the United States. Nearly 1% of cases are related to melanoma, which is often the most deadly form.
