Dietitian Discusses Impact of Evening Snacks on Sleep Quality

Consuming food and caffeinated drinks before bed can negatively affect the quality of your rest, says Roberta Anding, a dietitian from Baylor College of Medicine, USA. However, this does not mean you should completely forgo dinner, writes MedicalXpress.

Anding clarified that eating before sleep does not always adversely impact one’s weight and health. However, certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, and energy drinks, can disrupt sleep and cause fatigue upon waking. The dietitian recommended avoiding these after noon and refraining from heavy meals a couple of hours before bedtime, as digestion can hinder falling asleep and disturb natural circadian rhythms.

According to Anding, a light dinner will not harm your health or sleep. It is better to opt for foods rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats, such as Greek yogurt or fruit with peanut butter. If you feel thirsty before bed, you can drink not only water but also milk or caffeine-free sodas.
