Australian scientists Manisha Caleb and Emil Lenc have detected an unusual repeating signal from space. They discussed their findings in an article for “The Conversation.”

According to them, they recently discovered a signal not previously recorded by astronomers. Not only does its duration nearly reach an hour—making it the longest period of observation for such signals—but during several sessions, it was noted that the signal in one instance emitted long bright flashes, in another quick and faint pulses, and in the third, nothing at all.

The researchers emphasized that they managed to register the mysterious signal using a telescope in Western Australia.

Such signals can originate from neutron stars, but it is generally believed that their cycle cannot be this long.

Caleb and Lenc admitted that they cannot yet explain the nature of this phenomenon. In their opinion, it could be a very unusual neutron star. However, there are other explanations, which the researchers chose not to disclose.
