Twin Polar Bear Cubs Born
There is a new addition at the “Ortho-Doidu” Zoo in Yakutsk, where two polar bear cubs were born. Since December, zookeepers noticed changes in the behavior of the female polar bear, as she began to refuse food and later retreated to her den. Recently, with the help of a video camera, it was possible to see that the female polar bear had given birth to cubs. It is expected that the mother and her cubs will emerge from the den in March.
The parents of the bear cubs, Kolymana and Lomonosov, are both 12 years old. Kolymana was found orphaned in 2012, while Lomonosov was brought from the Leningrad Zoo later that same year.
As part of the program to support polar bears in zoos across the Russian Federation, an additional enclosure was built, necessary for the separate housing of the male and female during the cub-rearing period. In the wild, female bears raise their cubs independently.
