General practitioner Maria Belyaeva warned fellow citizens about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure during the summer in an interview with the online publication Regions.

She stated that extended time under the scorching sun can lead to burns and the development of skin and mucous membrane cancer.

Belyaeva highlighted that while ultraviolet (UV) rays trigger beneficial processes in the skin, such as vitamin D production, they also cause harmful effects. These harmful effects can result in sunburn and DNA damage in skin cells. When DNA is damaged, cancerous cells, rather than healthy ones, begin to proliferate during cell division.

UV rays can provoke the development of malignant tumors. One of the most common types of skin cancer is melanoma, Dr. Belyaeva concluded.
