Russia is set to see an increase in the number of AI-equipped cameras in its cities, leading to a significant rise in the issuance of fines. These cameras automatically penalize infractions such as improper parking, unauthorized trading locations, and illegal garbage dumping among other violations.
According to “Izvestia”, referencing statements from participants in the intelligent surveillance market, the number of government contracts for the supply of these “penalty” cameras in 2023 increased by 2.5 times compared to the previous year. The company Softlogic reported that while there were 97 such purchases last year, there were 239 in 2023. The total value of signed contracts also grew sixfold, reaching 1.5 billion rubles.
Experts believe that authorities in Russian cities recognize that cameras, which document various violations, have become an effective tool for boosting budget revenues. Furthermore, they enhance the quality and safety of life in urban areas.
According to Denis Loginov, CEO of Softlogic, the investment in installing these “smart” cameras pays off very quickly as they generate significant revenue. In major cities, the costs can be recouped in as little as two weeks, while in smaller localities, it takes a couple of months.
