Andrey Karneev, the head of the School of Asian Studies at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), believes that the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China plays a significant role in the development of relations between the two countries and is aimed at strengthening cooperation.
The expert suggests that practical issues, such as banking payments, are unlikely to be resolved during this trip.
Putin’s visit to China is scheduled for May 16-17, marking his first international trip following his election victory. There are numerous issues for discussion between the heads of state, but the primary goal of the visit is the symbolic importance of strengthening interaction between the countries.
In conversation with NSN, Karneev noted that among the topics for discussion will be bilateral relations, the development of trade, economic, and investment cooperation, as well as international political issues, including the situation in Ukraine and regional aspects. However, final decisions on problems should not be expected during the visit, as issues like banking payments will be handed over to specialized agencies.
It is important for the leaders to reaffirm the high level of relations rather than delve into the details of banking transactions. Putin’s visit plays a crucial role in the dynamics of relations between China and Russia, the expert believes.
