The results of the Unified State Exam (USE) might not be enough to secure a state-funded place in a chosen university. However, an applicant’s chances can significantly improve if they earn additional points.
Artem Mushta, the head of methodology and development of educational programs at MAXIMUM Education, explained to “Izvestia” how to obtain these points.
Any university can award an applicant up to 10 points for various individual achievements. Mushta emphasized that even if the total possible additional points are high, a university is only allowed to add a maximum of 10 points to the applicant’s ranking.
Each educational institution independently decides what achievements merit additional points. Furthermore, the number of points awarded for the same achievement can vary between universities.
The main achievements typically include: a diploma with honors, a final essay, a GTO (Ready for Labor and Defense) badge and other sports successes (especially when applying to a specialized university), participation in volunteer activities and competitions, as well as military service either by conscription, contract, or mobilization. In general, universities have no restrictions on the types of achievements for which they are willing to award points, but each achievement must be documented by the applicant.
Previously, Artem Mushta warned Russian graduates about an increase in fraudulent schemes exploiting the topic of the USE.
