Frequent consumption of sweets contributes to the development of cavities, but completely abstaining from them is not necessary, stated dentist Lyudmila Shemyakina in a conversation with “Gazeta.Ru”.

According to her, cavities form due to acids produced by bacteria that feed on carbohydrates. Tooth enamel loses minerals in an acidic environment, and sweets, adhering to the teeth, maintain this environment for a long time, increasing the risk of cavities.

The most harmful sweets for teeth are:

  • Toffees
  • Caramels
  • Lollipops
  • Dried fruits

Shemyakina noted that to minimize the risk, it is advisable to rinse the mouth with water or brush teeth after consuming sweets. It’s better to eat sweets no more than once a day, after the main meal, rather than as a snack.

Less harmful for teeth are dark chocolate, marshmallows, and natural marmalade. It’s also possible to eat candies with xylitol, which has antimicrobial properties, recommended the dentist.
