Some doctors occasionally attempt to push paid services on their patients, despite the fact that Russian citizens are entitled to free medical care. In a conversation with RIA “FederalPress,” expert Maria Slobodyanskaya explained how to undergo free testing at a commercial facility.

According to her, tests for vitamins, hormones, and measles antibodies are covered by the mandatory medical insurance policy (OMS).

When a doctor refers you to a private medical laboratory, verify whether the test is included in the list of free services, or contact your insurance company. It should be noted that the doctor may refuse if there are no medical indications for the test, Slobodyanskaya explained.

If there is a medical indication but the facility lacks specialists, equipment, or other resources, the clinic itself will find a place where the service can be provided under the OMS policy. You might be directed to a commercial organization, but you will need to bring the appropriate documents with you.

If the doctor insists on out-of-pocket payment and does not provide a referral, Slobodyanskaya advises requesting a written refusal. If the doctor persists, you should escalate the issue to the chief physician and involve your insurance company.
