One of the fundamental principles of a healthy lifestyle is to drink as much pure water as possible. Water is indeed crucial for the body, but not everyone can manage to consume the recommended 2-2.5 liters a day. Dietitian Tatyana Zaletova explained to aif.ru why this happens.

According to her, many people do not drink water because they do not feel thirsty. This is due to the body’s adaptation to current conditions. If a person is not accustomed to drinking water and does not monitor their fluid intake, the sensation of thirst can diminish. Instead, hunger may develop, leading individuals to consume food for hydration.

Zaletova highlighted that sometimes people confuse thirst with hunger. The body needs water, but some attempt to satisfy their thirst with food. She recommended drinking water before eating if you feel hungry.

One should start increasing their water intake gradually—about a glass per week. The excretory system needs to adapt to the higher fluid intake to avoid swelling or frequent trips to the bathroom, noted Zaletova.

She added that water should normally be easily expelled from the body. It is important to check the condition of the veins, kidneys, heart, and lymphatic system if swelling occurs. Many people in such situations simply stop drinking water, but this can worsen the problem.
