To restore plants affected by frost, they need to be pruned and watered generously, stated Nikita Chaplin, Chairman of the Union of Gardeners of the Moscow Region and a State Duma deputy, in a comment to RIA Novosti.
The beginning of May in the capital region was significantly colder than normal, with nighttime temperatures often dropping below freezing. According to meteorologists, the frost period in Moscow and the Moscow region has ended, and by mid-week, temperatures are expected to rise to 20 degrees Celsius.
Not all plants are equally affected by frost, and this needs to be considered. Plants with fragile and delicate stems or leaves are generally the most susceptible to frost damage. Damaged parts should be pruned, removing all frozen leaves and stems to accelerate recovery. It is important not to damage the healthy parts of the plants in the process, Chaplin explained.
He added that after pruning, plants should be watered abundantly to restore moisture levels in the soil. Frost can cause dehydration, so proper watering is an essential part of post-frost care.
Chaplin noted that plants need additional protection from future frosts. Special covering materials, such as non-woven fabric or garden covers, can be used to retain heat and prevent further damage.
Following these guidelines will create optimal conditions for plant growth, concluded Chaplin.
