The improvement of higher medical education in Russia necessitates establishing unified training requirements. Additionally, it is essential to launch a program for enhancing the qualifications of the teaching staff and updating the medical equipment available in relevant universities.

This was stated by Valery Falkov, the head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The initiative in this direction will commence on September 1, 2024. The update of medical equipment in universities will begin on January 1, 2025.

Currently, there are 127 universities in Russia where one can pursue a medical specialty. Of these, 49 are under the Ministry of Health, and 56 are under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. The total number of students enrolled in medical programs is 363,000, with the vast majority studying in institutions overseen by the Ministry of Health.

Health Minister Mikhail Murashko previously announced changes to the legislation concerning the targeted admission of students. The law alters the application procedure for training, the process of obtaining referrals, and the admission process to universities.

Murashko noted that, in general, the obligations stipulated in the target training agreement are being fulfilled by university graduates. For instance, in the 2022-2023 academic year, 70% of those who undertook target training fulfilled their commitments.
