Researchers from the Institute of History, Archaeology, and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Far Eastern Branch have employed laser scanning for the first time in exploring the Krinichnoye hillfort in the Khorolsky district of Primorye.

This groundbreaking use of laser terrain scanning in a monument in the Primorsky Krai provides a detailed examination of the landscape. The new methodology revealed that the hillfort consists not only of one but three ramparts, with two of them nearly imperceptible. The scanning technology enables the identification of numerous details that remained unnoticed in previous studies.

The Hasan District is distinctive as the convergence point of three nations: Russia, China, and North Korea. Currently, to expand their research, the institute has entered into collaboration agreements with South Korea, China, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan. In 2023, extensive work was conducted on the Jurchen hillforts, including inaugural stationary excavations at the Smolyaninovsky hillfort. Additionally, a comprehensive study was conducted at the Krasninsky hillfort and the Shaiha-Redut site. These endeavors have yielded new insights into the medieval history of Primorye.
