In Primorye region, Russia, a rare Far Eastern leopard, who lives in the national park “Leopard Land”, received a name Meyerhold in honour of Vsevolod Meyerhold, famous theatre director and actor. The leopard is registered under the number Leo 271M. He came under patronage of Russian State Institute of Performing Arts (RGISI). Furthermore, the national park “Leopard Land” and RGISI have already had experience of productive partnership: the institute made unique souvenir cards and models with leopards for exhibitions. Now the Institute became a guardian of Meyerhold: the so-called godfather of the rare cat. He will be taking part in charity work and various conservation activities.
Meyerhold is currently about four years old. Living in the heart of the national park “Leopard Land”, exactly in the central part of the conservation territory next to a village named Barabash in Primorsky area.
The Far Eastern leopard (known by the other name Amur leopard) is one of the rarest and most endangered species of predatory animals. Actually, this specimen lives only in the southwest of Primorye region. It is known that there are approximately 125 adult predators in the “Leopard Land” national park living at the moment.
