Algorithm for rapid drug development created in St. Petersburg.
Specialists from ITMO University in St. Petersburg have developed an algorithm that utilizes artificial intelligence to generate pharmaceutical cocrystals, which form the basis of future medicinal drugs. This innovative technology promises to expedite and reduce the cost of the drug development process while improving the procedure of creating dosage forms, particularly the process of compressing the drug substance into a tablet.
Currently, the algorithm is presented as Python code, but in the future, developers plan to create a website or application based on it. Additionally, in the long term, there are plans to broaden the range of properties the algorithm can predict and adapt it to other chemical systems.
Pharmaceutical cocrystals, consisting of a drug molecule and a coformer (an auxiliary molecule), play a crucial role in altering the physicochemical properties of medicinal compounds.
