The Moscow Zoo, one of the oldest in Europe, celebrates its 160th anniversary with a series of exhibitions that will unfold in various locations throughout the city. The exhibitions will be dedicated to the unique collection of animals, the history of the zoo, nature, and animal conservation. Over the past 160 years, the zoo’s collection has significantly grown, now comprising more than 15,000 individuals from 1,243 species of various animals. Each creature has its own unique story and character.
An important focus of the zoo’s activities is the preservation of rare species. The zoo actively participates in programs for the conservation of rare and endangered species, supporting projects for the breeding and restoration of populations of rare animals.
In addition to the 160th anniversary of the zoo, 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Young Biologists Club, the 30th anniversary of the Center for the Reproduction of Rare Animal Species, and the 15th anniversary of the opening of the zoo’s branch in Veliky Ustyug. All these events emphasize the contribution and significance of the Moscow Zoo in preserving biodiversity and educating the new generation of zoologists.
