This year, six out of seven cosmonauts celebrated New Year in space for the first time at the International Space Station (ISS).

According to cosmonaut and Hero of Russia Anton Shkaplerov, in space, you can celebrate New Year 16 times because the station orbits the Earth 16 times a day, crossing the meridian where the holiday begins.

Calling from home to space? Easy! Families of cosmonauts can connect with the ISS directly from home using a regular tablet.

What about weekends? Cosmonauts can take additional days off for six months — usually, two days off for half a year.

No alcohol! There won’t be champagne on the table — alcohol is prohibited in space.

The New Year’s feast differs from the usual astronaut’s diet with its menu. Each person tries to surprise colleagues and bring something special. Certainly, the typical Russian Olivier salad won’t be there, but there are other joys.

Moreover, a festive Christmas tree is even set up aboard the ISS.
