The station “North Pole-41” welcomed new residents, and “North Pole-42” will begin operating in August.
The research vessel “Akademik Treshnikov” reached the drifting station “North Pole-41” in the Arctic Ocean. It delivered supplies, New Year’s gifts, and three new polar researchers.
“NP-41” was opened on October 2, 2022. Researchers were delivered to an ice floe to create a frost-resistant platform, “North Pole.” The platform is tethered to the ice floe and drifts with it. Scientists live on the ship in safe and comfortable conditions, working both on the platform and in the ice camp on the floe.
Originally planned to conclude by the end of 2023, the expedition faced challenges as the selected floe began to crack. In August 2023, “NP-41” was moved to another floe, and the mission was extended. According to the new plans, the station will operate until spring 2024. After that, the ship will head into open waters, reaching the Fram Strait before heading to Murmansk.
Following this, the polar researchers will embark on a new long voyage to different parts of the Earth and establish a new polar station named “North Pole-42.” It is planned to commence operations in August 2024.
