The number of smokers in Russia is declining. The rates of smoking cessation vary across regions, but this trend is observed throughout the country.

However, the issue related to vaping remains relevant, stated Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Mikhail Murashko in a conversation with RIA Novosti on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.

He noted that unfortunately, the youth in Russia continue to be exposed to vaping. In connection with this, amendments have been made to the legislation on smoking prevention, although Russia already had the most progressive legislation on this matter in the world.

The Ministry of Health reported that retail cigarette sales in 2023 amounted to 1000 units per person, down from 1460 units the previous year. Alcohol consumption in Russia has also decreased.

It was previously announced a proposal to increase fines for non-compliance with restrictions on the sale of nicotine-containing products. Fines could amount to up to 500,000 rubles for legal entities, up to 100,000 rubles for officials, and up to 30,000 rubles for individuals.

According to WHO, tobacco use is one of the most serious threats to health worldwide. Half of tobacco users die. More than 8 million people die annually. Of these, 1.2 million are non-smokers, but they are exposed to secondhand smoke.
