The share of domestic oysters in the Russian market has reached 60-70%

The share of domestic oysters in the Russian market has grown to 60-70%, and the production of other valuable seafood in the country is also increasing. Ilya Shestakov, the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, shared this information. Since 2018, the volume of production of valuable seafood in Russia has increased fivefold, reaching 84,000 tons. Despite sanctions prohibiting the supply of planting material from the European Union, the majority of oysters available in the domestic market are produced in the Azov-Black Sea basin or in the Russian Far East.

It is worth noting that in September 2023, researchers at the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas (FIC IBSS) managed to obtain the first batch of oyster larvae grown in the Black Sea.

Shestakov also noted that the development of aquaculture in Russia is ongoing, and currently, the production of fish and seafood in this sector is about 400,000 tons. Further growth is planned to reach 600,000 tons by 2030.

Moreover, not only the volume but also the structure of the industry is changing. While carp species dominated the market in the past, now salmon species are the absolute leaders.
