Utility rates in Russia will rise from July 1, 2024. The government has approved the maximum rate increase depending on the region, setting it at 9.8% for St. Petersburg.

However, the city authorities have cancelled this rate hike. The press service of Alexander Beglov, the governor of St. Petersburg, announced that the city government has decided to keep utility tariffs at their current levels.

Beglov stated that numerous residents have recently contacted him regarding the planned tariff increase, requesting it not to be implemented. He noted that the budget of St. Petersburg has surpassed one trillion rubles, allowing the allocation of funds to resource-supplying organizations to compensate for losses associated with the tariff freeze. All benefits for citizens concerning utility payments will be maintained, as emphasized by the city administration’s press service.

Additionally, there are plans at the legislative level to require resource-supplying organizations in the utility sector to have their own investment programs.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin, the funds received by utility resource providers should be directed towards network modernization as part of investment programs. Currently, these funds are often spent on salary increases and the purchase of expensive cars. The government will control this.
