Stores to offer free products for vulnerable populations.
A legislative initiative is set to be introduced in the State Duma regarding the establishment of “social” shelves in stores. These shelves will feature products nearing their expiration dates, available for free to pensioners and socially vulnerable citizens.
If the proposed legislation is approved, retailers may be obligated to implement such shelves. Individuals interested in obtaining products from these shelves would be required to present documentation, such as a pension certificate or a statement confirming their special status.
The accompanying explanation for the legislative proposal highlights the current issue of inefficient food utilization in Russia, where over a third of products end up as waste.
