Not all beverages are suitable for quenching thirst in hot weather. Doctor-therapist and dietitian Yulia Chekhonina, in conversation with “KP,” discussed which drinks are best to choose and which ones to avoid.

According to her, room temperature water is best for quenching thirst. Mineral water is particularly beneficial because in summer, the body loses not only water but also minerals. It’s advisable to choose table or medicinal-table water, and medicinal water should only be consumed as prescribed by a doctor.

Chekhonina noted that cold water can lead to local hypothermia and summer colds or tonsillitis, so it should be avoided.

Homemade lemonade — water with lemon, mint, and basil — also effectively quenches thirst, refreshes, and relaxes, explained the doctor.

She also recommended drinking kefir, which quenches thirst and contains protein. However, it should be noted that kefir can act as a mild laxative.

Compote and berry drink (mors) are best consumed homemade without added sugar. The less sugar in the drink, the better it quenches thirst. If you buy compote or mors, it’s advisable to dilute it with water.

If you drink green or black tea, they should be at room temperature. However, black coffee is not recommended for quenching thirst. If you still choose to drink coffee, avoid adding sugar to it. Due to its bitter taste, coffee can actually increase thirst, warned Chekhonina.
