According to current legislation, it is possible to refund the cost of a ticket if the trip is impossible due to illness. However, this requires providing supporting documents.
However, the list of such documents is not established. Airlines themselves decide what to demand from passengers to refund the ticket. Some of them do not have information on their website regarding this matter, so passengers have to spend a long time figuring out how to get their money back.
The State Duma has prepared a bill that establishes a unified list of documents for refunding tickets due to illness. The initiative to adopt such a law was put forward by the “Fair Russia – For the Truth” faction.
The necessary medical certificates will be specified for each type of transportation.
A valid reason for canceling a trip may not only be a person’s illness or the illness of a family member with whom they intended to travel but also the death of a close relative. The airline must be informed of the situation before the end of check-in for the flight. Additionally, supporting documents must be provided. A single medical certificate about the illness will not be sufficient. A doctor must confirm that traveling by air is not recommended due to the specific illness. There are many illnesses that do not prevent a person from traveling by various means of transportation.
