Russia may create a nuclear power plant that will provide energy for a base on the Moon. This will be a significant contribution from Russia to the Russian-Chinese lunar project.
This was announced by the head of “Roscosmos” Yuri Borisov, as reported by TASS. The energy source on the Moon must be reliable and durable. The duration of the night on the satellite is 14 Earth days. Therefore, the use of solar panels will not allow for all the necessary tasks to be performed. Electrical devices will not work for an extended period of time. A nuclear power source will solve this problem.
Earlier, Yuri Borisov stated that “Roscosmos,” together with colleagues from China, plans to deliver a nuclear power source to the Moon from 2033 to 2035.
In November 2023, an agreement was ratified between Russia and China on cooperation in the exploration of the Moon and the creation of a lunar station, which will be used for scientific purposes.
Russia and China will establish a control center for the lunar base. In addition, the delivery of large cargoes to the Earth’s satellite will be organized. Further plans involve joint lunar exploration and assistance to foreign partners who will land a person on the Moon.
