Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s consumer rights watchdog, has detected new viruses carried by ticks and mosquitoes as part of its “Sanitary Shield” federal project. These viruses are currently under rigorous examination at Rospotrebnadzor’s scientific institutions and are preliminarily assessed as not posing a serious threat.

Russia is home to about 50 species of ticks. In Asian Russia, there are 7 species, whereas up to 14 species can be found in the North Caucasian District and other regions. The most dangerous diseases transmitted by ticks include encephalitis and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Experts urge Russians to exercise caution when visiting parks and forests. Recommended precautions include wearing light-colored clothing, protecting the head and neck, and using repellents.

In case of a tick bite or if symptoms of illness appear post-bite, immediate medical attention should be sought, as viruses transmitted by ticks can lead to serious health consequences.
