The Russian company “Bureau 1440” has launched three satellites, marking the first use of the 5G NTN standard in Russia to provide connectivity to subscribers.
This was reported by the Ministry of Digital Development. The development of the satellites took 14 months. Their mass and dimensions are twice as large due to the installation of additional equipment, explained the ministry. The satellites were launched as part of the “Dawn 2” mission.
The first mission, “Dawn 1,” was carried out in June 2023 and was quite successful. At that time, the communication speed reached 48 megabits per second, with a latency of 42 milliseconds. Such characteristics allow for making video calls to multiple subscribers or watching TV in 4K resolution.
According to Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, creating a low-orbit satellite constellation is important for Russia. It will help provide fast and affordable internet to Russians.
The satellites’ performance will be tested for several months. Following this, a domestic satellite communication service will be established in Russia, allowing the entire country to be covered by the internet. It is expected to become operational in 2027.
Previously, it was announced that US authorities plan to begin the implementation of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication around 2030.
