The Russian Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has drafted a legislative proposal to increase maternity benefits to the level of the minimum wage for women who lose their jobs due to company liquidations.
Currently under public discussion, the press service of the Ministry of Labour reported that these maternity and childbirth allowances are insured payments traditionally available to women employed at the time they take maternity leave.
Under the existing laws, women who are unemployed at the time of maternity leave due to their employer’s liquidation receive a minimal allowance of 922 rubles per month (about 4,300 rubles for 140 calendar days).
The Ministry’s new proposal seeks to increase this payment to reflect the minimum wage, aiming to provide better financial support during the crucial periods of pregnancy and childbirth.
The updated regulations are slated to come into effect from January 1, 2025.
