Russian scientists have developed technologies that allow the production of paper, fertilizers, building materials, and a glass analogue from rice straw.

This was announced by the Russian Environmental Operator. According to its director, Denis Butsaev, rice production creates serious environmental problems. One of them is the disposal of rice straw. Currently, it is burned in the fields, leading to serious air pollution – the “black sky” effect.

In Russia, over a million tons of rice are produced annually. It is grown on an area of over 190,000 hectares. For every ton of grain, there are 1.3-1.5 tons of rice straw.

Scientists from the Ural State Forest Engineering University have developed a technology for obtaining cellulose from such straw, which can be used to produce white paper.

At the D.I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Technology University, a technology for the production of building and thermal insulation materials from rice straw, as well as liquid glass, has been created.

In addition, rice straw can be used as organic fertilizer.

Earlier, the Russian Environmental Center reported an expansion of the list of goods subject to mandatory recycling. It included building materials, smartphones, tights, and bags.
