Quantum Technologies Will Soon Appear in Modern Technology

In Russia, there are plans to establish the production of superconducting quantum processors for the next-generation computers. Specialists from the Bauman Moscow State Technical University and the Dukhov Research Institute of Automatics (VNIIA) presented their development. Scientists have been working on creating quantum computers since 2016. The results of their research were published in the international scientific journal Scientific Reports.

Why are old computers no longer relevant?

Russian specialists note that supercomputers can handle calculations much faster. This has been achieved thanks to artificial intelligence technologies and principles of quantum mechanics. Researchers have developed a unique technology – superconducting Josephson junctions. Hundreds of quantum chips can fit on one plate, all of which are connected by a technological manufacturing route. Moreover, the dimensions of such a device are minimal – 4 by 10 mm.

The scientific director of VNIIA, Alexander Andriyash, explained that by 2030, the power of domestic super-powerful computers may increase tens of times, all thanks to the serial production of quantum coprocessors.

Despite the uniqueness of the development, its production is much cheaper compared to traditional computer building approaches.

Where to produce?

The production of quantum chips is planned to be launched in the new campus of the research cluster based at the Bauman University. Scientists note that this year the research center will be equipped with equipment already designed for contract manufacturing of such parts.

Experts expect to supply superconducting integrated circuits to leading domestic technology companies and scientific laboratories. In 6 years, the growth in demand for such devices should be about 35%.
