A team of researchers from the Singapore University of Technology and Design has created a multilingual touchscreen gaming app for older adults aimed at enhancing cognitive skills and maintaining mental clarity. The study’s findings are published in the journal Innovation in Aging.
According to experts, a decline in cognitive abilities is a natural part of aging. However, some studies have shown that bilingualism in elderly individuals promotes neuroplasticity, preserves cognitive reserve, and provides protection against Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers leveraged the benefits of bilingualism to develop a new app called Dual-Language Intervention in Semantic Memory (DISC). The app features puzzles designed to improve memory, logic, thinking, and attention.
The application was tested on both healthy and frail elderly volunteers. Results indicated that using DISC led to greater improvements in mental abilities compared to traditional cognitive training and monolingual computer programs. Additionally, participants found the DISC exercises more engaging.
Following further refinements, the app has been rebranded as Advancing Mental Invigoration (Ami). The researchers are now working to integrate their development into clinical practice and are conducting additional tests.
