A group of researchers from different countries has discovered a method to combat insomnia. A scientific study published in the BMJ Open journal helped understand that regular exercise (2-3 times a week) over a long period helps normalize sleep.

Nearly 4,400 people participated in the 10-year study. Over the years of the experiment, they filled out questionnaires about the frequency of physical activity and symptoms of insomnia. Those who engaged in sports at least twice a week were considered physically active.

Over the 10 years, 37% of the study participants remained inactive, 18% started exercising, 20% stopped physical activity, and 25% were consistently active. The latter group mainly consisted of young men, individuals with average weight, as well as non-smokers and working citizens.

After adjusting for age, gender, and body mass index, scientists found that physically active people were less likely to suffer from insomnia. Among those who started engaging in physical activity, there were 21% more individuals who slept 6-9 hours per day compared to those who did not exercise at all.

The study’s findings confirm previous research indicating the benefits of exercise for insomnia and underscore the importance of regular physical activity over an extended period.
