Environmental movements and actions have gained significant popularity in Russia over the past five years. Much of this has been facilitated by the national project “Ecology,” within which old landfills are being eliminated, rivers are being cleaned, forests are being restored, and programs to conserve rare animals are being implemented.

Reclamation and Sorting

One of the key directions of the project is the reclamation of landfills. By the end of this year, it is planned to eliminate 191 landfill sites within the boundaries of 148 cities in the country. However, to prevent the formation of new landfills, it is necessary to change the waste management system. A new waste management scheme is actively being developed.

Across Russia, waste sorting complexes and waste processing plants are being constructed. Infrastructure is being created to allow people to conveniently sort waste themselves. These include new container sites with bins for different types of waste – glass, plastic, paper, and more. Over the past five years, 249 waste sorting and processing facilities have been introduced in the country. Activist movements for collecting recyclables are also developing.

Forest Fires

Forests are the lungs of the country. The main task is to protect green areas from fires and deforestation. This year, it is planned to purchase more than 16,000 units of firefighting equipment for effective protection of forest areas and forestry enterprises.

It is important not only to preserve but also to increase the forest wealth of the country. To achieve this, the “Memory Garden” campaign has been launched, within which volunteers, eco-activists, and all interested individuals plant new trees in forest areas of their region. The goal of the campaign is to plant 27 million trees. Each tree is planted in memory of those who perished during the Great Patriotic War.
