The Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka has announced that the issuance of free visas to Russian tourists has been extended indefinitely. This decision is confirmed by an official notification from Sri Lankan authorities sent to the Russian embassy.
In addition to Russia, the free visa regime has been extended to tourists from six other countries: India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Initially introduced in October 2023, the Sri Lankan government planned for the free visa policy to be temporary. However, it appears that the authorities have decided to maintain it due to its positive impact on boosting tourist influx.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Sri Lanka has transferred the management of Mattala Rajapaksa Airport to Russia. According to aviation expert Roman Gusarov, this agreement is mutually beneficial. Russian companies will be able to leverage the favorable investment climate on the island. For Sri Lanka, the agreement holds significance as well, aiming to achieve desired outcomes. The country often engages foreign firms to manage its airports, which helps in upgrading infrastructure, increasing airport revenues, and boosting the flow of tourists from around the world.
