Exploring the Festive Capital of the Russian North

Vologda is often hailed as the “New Year’s capital of the Russian North.” Each season, around 14,000 tourists choose this city for their January celebrations, with an additional 40,000 arriving for sightseeing excursions.

The heart of the New Year festivities lies at Kremlyovskaya Square, hosting the traditional Christmas fair “Made in Vologda,” where exquisite crafts by Vologda artisans, renowned lacework, confectionery delights, and farm produce await visitors.

Another gem, the “Crafted Joy” fair, resides within the Southwest Tower of Vologda Kremlin. Running from January 2nd to 6th, this fair showcases handmade souvenirs, ornaments, apparel, natural cosmetics, and much more. Guests are welcomed by performers, Ded Moroz (Father Frost), and Snegurochka (Snow Maiden).

At Ded Moroz’s residence in Veterans Park, traditional winter revelries unfold. Theatrical performances, ice skating, and sledding will continue until Christmas.

A must-visit list includes the Architectural and Ethnographic Museum “Semenkovo,” Pirogov Boulevard, the “Lokomotiv” stadium with its expansive ice rink, Kovyrinsky Park, and the Kremlin Garden—a picturesque gem within the city.
