The newly identified FLiRT strain of the coronavirus, which has been found in several countries including Russia, is a new variant of Omicron. Despite this, it is expected to cause fewer severe cases, according to virologist and professor Anatoly Altstein from the Gamaleya Center, as reported by 360.ru.

Characteristics of the FLiRT Variant

  • Pathogenicity: The FLiRT strain is less pathogenic compared to previous variants like Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, which often led to severe illness and fatalities.
  • Infectiousness: Although Omicron caused a significant number of infections, with daily cases peaking at 3.5 million worldwide, the FLiRT variant is less contagious than Omicron.

Vaccine Efficacy

Altstein emphasized that while vaccines remain effective in reducing the severity of the disease and preventing fatalities, they do not entirely prevent infection with the FLiRT variant. Vaccinated individuals are still at risk of contracting this new strain, though they are likely to experience milder symptoms.

Current Situation in Russia

  • Cases: As of the latest reports from Rospotrebnadzor, Russia has recorded 178 cases of the FLiRT variant, with the majority (170 cases) associated with the KS.1 strain.
  • Symptoms: The symptoms of the FLiRT variant are similar to those of Omicron, including cough, high fever, headache, severe fatigue, and loss of taste or smell.

While the FLiRT variant is less severe than its predecessors, it still poses a risk of infection. Vaccines continue to play a crucial role in mitigating severe outcomes and fatalities. However, individuals should remain vigilant and continue to follow public health guidelines to protect themselves from the virus.
